CLU History and Mission

For more than two decades, The Center for Learning Unlimited has been dedicated to successfully serving the social, emotional and educational needs of bright, complex children and youth with histories of poor performance and adjustment in mainstream school settings.  Using a relationship-based approach, The Center staff creates a closely-knit community atmosphere of care, concern and support.  In this purposeful setting, students are able to grow in confidence, learn positive social and coping skills, build healthy relationships and move forward on a productive educational path.  A majority of our students are ultimately able to transition back into their regular public or private school, graduate and go on to post-secondary education.

The Center’s work has gradually evolved to include a major focus on the complex interventions required with students impacted by Asperger’s Syndrome, Bipolar Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) – Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS).  Most of these students possess above average learning potential, but falter due to neurologically-based difficulties that compromise the integrity of their social awareness, adaptability and learning styles.  The result is that they are often seriously challenged in their efforts to function independently at school, home and in the community.

The Center’s intervention model has been carefully honed to ensure that each student receives the highly individualized, stepped programming they need.  We bring together a staff of experienced professionals to diagnose and prescribe appropriate behavioral and learning strategies, consistent with Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals and California state curriculum standards.  At every level, flexibility and adaptability are cornerstones of The Center’s interventions.  In addition, we believe strongly in working to ensure that expectations are consistent between school and home.

The Center celebrates the unique abilities of the children and youth it serves.  We believe that each one deserves the chance to be happy, loved and nurtured within a safe, competent and caring environment as they grow and learn to access their potential for health and success.

Mission

Our mission is to reconnect, complex children with their academic, social and emotional potential and, thereby, empower them to engage as citizens of the 21st century.
